The other night I worked late and decided to get McDonalds (Rengstorff Ave., Mountain View, California) for "dinner" on the way home. I pulled into the drive-through and waited for 10 minutes while several other cars slowly got theirs. As I got to the yell-your-order-please box, I noticed lights going off and some kind of commotion in the line behind me as a pickup truck drove away. Suddenly a McGuy appeared at my window, smiled, and said in thickly accented English "Clove". I said "Clove?" and he repeated "Clove".
Then it hit me (I'm slow): the place was closed, even though it was way too early for them to close. I drove up to the darkened window, where a note was posted, stating that the joint was closing early tonight due to "remodeling". Would have been nice if they told me before I waited the 10 minutes. So I drove away, still craving the junk food.
I headed for the next McD's down the road, about 2 miles away. Happily, it was not being remodeled that night. As my bag of food was hurled at me through the car window in the customary fashion, I noticed the transparent container below the drive-through hatch where buyers can toss their change for charitable purposes. The container held a bunch of coins, and one large piece of currency. I stared at the money and read the writing on the upside-down bill: TEN DOLLARS, CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA.
Just another night in McDonaldland.
