Assembly language lives!

Just when I figured the modern programming world was all about high-level-languages, I've started seeing signs of assembly language here and there. Recently I got to spend some quality time with Wolf Rentzch's amazing mach_override and mach_inject, which reactivated an old urge to learn more about PowerPC assember. (I can code my way out of a 680x0 assembler, but PPC? Not so much.)

There are a couple of new books about this venerable art, and there's been a bit of buzz in the Mac developer corner of the blogosphere about assembler. MarkD posts a list of links about the subject, and Wolf ruminates on the topic.

The Sippy Cups

The Sippy Cups are a San Francisco-based band that plays music for kids. But instead of the usual kid stuff, they play classic rock like Pink Floyd, The Who, and The Ramones. You just haven't lived until you've seen a roomful of toddlers pogoing to "I Wanna Be Sedated".

April Fool's Day

I love a good April Fool's Day prank. I'm hard to fool, so I prefer the outlandishly funny stuff. The best one I've seen so far today is Boring Boring. I've done some April fooling myself in the past, but not this year. About a decade ago, I created a fake news release for the daily e-mail newsletter of the company where I was working. The story said that our competitors had decided to start giving away their (software) product for free, while we were charging plenty. The story caused our company's exec staff to spend hours in a meeting trying to come up with a new strategy. Eventually somebody figured out that it was a fake. After that, the CEO had to approve all April 1st stories in the daily newsletter.
