Recently the wonderful KFOG Morning Show discussed comedy records. Listeners called up to share their favorite comedy records of all time, mostly remembered from childhood. Lots of people mentioned Bill Cosby (my wife's favorite), Firesign Theatre, and Jonathan Winters. Some of my favorites:
- You Don't Have To Be Jewish and When You're In Love, The Whole World Is Jewish -- classic, yet strangely hip, riffing on mixed marriage, Jewish mothers, and trying to fit in. Surely every American Jewish family owned these in the 1960s. Now available as a single CD. More than 30 years later, I still know most of these by heart. (Listen to samples or buy it here.) "I'm hiding! In the front closet!"
- Cheech and Chong, Big Bambu and others -- passed down to me by my big brother. Subversive stoner humor. "Dave's not here!" (check it out on iTunes)
- Steve Martin, Let's Get Small -- probably the first comedy record I bought myself. After appearing on Saturday Night Live, he was huge. (iTunes link here.) "Be honest and love all your neighbors; be obsequious, purple, and clairvoyant."
- Emo Philips, E=MO2. Absolutely gut-busting. "How many people here have telekenetic powers? Raise my hand." Read quotes (not as good as seeing/hearing Emo) here.
What are your favorites?
My favorites:
- Dane Cook, Harmful if Swallowed
- David Cross, It's Not Funny
- Mitch Hedberg, Mitch Altogether

I just got introduced to "Arovertherapy", my Les Barker. British spoken poetry, but absolutely brilliant. "how will I spend eternity? Reinstalling Windows"

I have a weakness for "Dave's Not Here", but then I used that clip as an answering-machine message for a few years.
