Dumb and dumber

Georgia is considering banning the word evolution from its public school science curriculum. Sounds like something that might happen in a backward, third-world country dominated by the religious right.

But wait, it's even stupider than that. They're banning the word, but not the concept: teachers just have to say "biological changes over time". This doubly-dumb "compromise" manages to solve nothing and piss everybody off. Well done.

He Hate Me

One of the more interesting stories in the Super Bowl belongs to Rod Smart. A few years ago he was in the wacky, ill-fated XFL, the league started by legendary wrestling entrepreneur Vince McMahon. In this league, players could put whatever they wanted on the backs of their jerseys, instead of just the usual boring last names. One of the few players to take advantage of this opportunity was Rod Smart of the Las Vegas Outlaws, who famously posted HE HATE ME on his back. What? Why?

The nickname, Smart said, is self-explanatory. You go out, beat your defender on the football field, and "He Hate Me."

Everything that was supposed to happen happened. Almost all things that should not have happened failed to happen. She'll be in the hospital for a few more days. Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. Please feel free to use the comments space to express more.

Texting with Jesus

A Finnish company is no longer allowed to respond to text-message prayers with text messages from Jesus. The service cost €1.20 per message. Apparently the SMS rates from the heavenly kingdom are quite expensive.

Barbara's health, part 947

Barbara is off to the hospital tomorrow for a little surgery. With luck, all will go well and she'll be home in a few days.

Mac Marketing story

This buggy article is all the press I saw about the Macintosh Marketing retrospective at the Computer History Museum last week. The event was lots of fun, with plenty of great stories and old friends turning up. The panel ended too soon, after only a couple of hours. At MacHack, we go all night. Marketing weenies! ;-)

Sears Fine Food re-opening!

The cool restaurant, which closed last month, has been rescued by San Francisco restauranteur Man Kim and will reopen this spring. Yippee!

Andy Hertzfeld's Folklore

Andy Hertzfeld has made Folklore, a wonderful new web site. Folklore records history by collecting stories from people who created it and witnessed it. Andy wrote the software for Folklore, which allows readers to become participants by commenting on stories or even contributing their own. Right now, there's only one project on Folklore, the development of the first Macintosh computer, but others will be added.

Andy wrote most of the stories so far. His enthusiastic and warm personality comes through fully in his terrific writing (as it does in his software). The stories at Folklore are linked and indexed in multiple ways, and reading them is addictive. Check it out!
